Cumming
Radiation Oncologist performs first SBRT in county
When Charles Smith was diagnosed
with lung cancer, his choices for treatment were limited due to other
illnesses. “My doctor told me the news and I thought this is it – surgery is
not for me,” said Smith. To an extent Smith was right. Surgery was not the
treatment of course for him. However, there was an alternative treatment for
Smith.
Stereotactic body radiation
therapy (SBRT) is a technique designed to deliver radiation therapy very
precisely to tumors anywhere in the body. “Mr. Smith was a perfect candidate
for this treatment, and upon discussing his case with his referring
physician, Mr. Smith and his family, we agreed this would be the best course
of action,” explained Dr. Chad Levitt, Medical Director and radiation
oncologist with Radiotherapy Clinics’ North Georgia Radiation Therapy Center
in Cumming. The treatment was precise and lasted only five days, compared to
the three month timeline that a radiation therapy treatment would require.
“Typically, SBRT consists of 3 to 5 treatments carried out over the course
of 1 to 2 weeks,” Levitt added. Mr. Smith was not, according to Levitt, a
surgical candidate because of other medical problems.
The procedure’s accurate
radiation allows for the delivery of higher doses of radiation and
potentially improving the precision necessary to kill the cancer cell of a
tumor. The reduction in the dose of radiation to the normal tissue around
the tumor helps reduce a patient’s side effects due to the radiation. “I was
amazed by how well I felt—it was easy and convenient and I really didn’t
feel uncomfortable at any time,” explains Smith. “Dr. Levitt explained
everything to me in a way I could understand it. He took away the fears and
anxiety I had.”
Charles Smith and Dr. Chad Levitt
Smith’s daughter Shirley agrees.
“After we talked to Dr. Levitt, the nurse and the therapists we felt that
everything was going to be fine.”
“They saved my life,” Smith
added. And he should know – the 76 year-old grandfather of six has lived a
long and interesting life. “I really don’t think I could have survived a
surgery or other treatment for my cancer. I’ve had 14 surgeries in my life.”
Charles Smith’s life is less
than ordinary. A self-confessed hobo for 21 years, Smith was raised in a
carnival.
