Active Clinical Trials in Johns Creek

 

The following is a list of active clinical trials being conducted in the Johns Creek area by JCHA members.  Please e-mail Lee Herman, MD with changes to the list.   Please contact the investigator directly if you have any patients to enroll, or if you have any questions.

1.       Type 2 Diabetes:
A research study with a pharmaceutical company evaluating the effects of an investigational drug for Type 2 Diabetes is being conducted.  You must be:

  • be between the ages of 18 and 80

  • have been treated for type 2 diabetes with one or more anti-diabetic medications including oral agents, Exenatide (Byetta), or Pramlintide (Symlin)

  • have NOT used insulin to control their diabetes

  • are not a smoker

2.       Osteoarthritis:
There may be a new pain medication for Osteoarthritis.  If you have low back, hip, or knee pain from Osteoarthritis, you may qualify for a clinical research study of an investigational pain medication.  Participants will receive at no cost, study related:

  • Physical exams

  • Laboratory tests

  • Pain medication

3.       Osteoarthritis:
Bothered by Arthritis?  Concerned about Heart Disease?  We are conducting a research study of 3 approved medications commonly used to treat pain due to osteoarthrits (OA) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in people who also have or are at high risk for heart disease.  Qualified participants will receive study-related medical care, regular study check-ups, and study medication at no charge.  To qualify you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older

  • Have had osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis for your pain for at leats 6 months

  • Have or be at high risk for heart disease, which includes a history of heart attack, stroke, or diabetes

Research Studies:

 

1. A 76 –week prospective, open–label multicenter study to evaluate the long-term effect of Exelon capsule and transdermal patch on worsening of the underlying motor symptoms of PD in patients with mild to moderately severe dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease

 

2. A Prospective Randomized 12- Week controlled study of Visual Field Change in Subjects with Partial Seizures receiving Pregablin or Placebo

 

3. An Open–label, long-term follow-up study with Keppra XR for treatment of partial onset seizures.

Active Clinical Trials

1.  Excessive Sleepiness Associated with Mild or Moderate Closed Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

TBI within the last 4 years        Excessive Daytime Sleepiness began within one year of TBI

Armodafinil vs placebo

 

2.  Refractory partial seizures with and without secondary generalization –adjunctive therapy

No 25 day seizure free period     No status epilepticus in the last year

Study drug vs placebo   There is a open label extension trial patients may elect to rollover into

 

3.  Efficacy trial of pregabalin as monotherapy in the treatment of patients with partial seizures who are not well controlled on their current antiepileptic drug treatment.

Partial seizures with and without secondary generalization

No 4 week seizure free period   >4  partial seizures in 8 weeks   A extension trial is also available

1.      Celebrex vs. OTHER (Mobic, etc.) in patients with chronic osteoarthritis requiring daily NSAID treatment.  Patients must not be allergic to Sulfa.
 

2.      Testosterone gel vs. Placebo in Hypogonadal males.
 

3.      Actos plus Glucophage vs. Glucophage plus a new DPP4-inhibitor in patients with uncontrolled diabetes.
 

4.      Observational trial involving uncontrolled hypertensives where they receive a home blood pressure monitor to monitor their own blood pressure to see if they can acheive better control when they have the ability to monitor their own blood pressures.
